The Pima Association of Governments (PAG) has been organizing a count of bicyclists and pedestrians in the Tucson region since 2008. A number (71) of core areas have been counted each year, and this allows us to make an assessment of ridership over time. Unfortunately, the conditions in October when the counts are made vary considerably. Thus, the very high count observed in 2008 has yet to be reached, although the numbers have increased between 2009 and 2011. When we examined some of the factors that might have affected bicycle usage (weather, gasoline costs, and unemployment), it appears that average high temperature, followed by gas costs are the best predictors.
