Leadership Development

When we asked a random sample of the region’s population to identify the areas in which our performance was good, and those areas in which our performance was poor, there was considerable agreement (46.5%) that we were not doing well in terms of our “having effective leadership.” Unfortunately, there are no good objective measures of leadership quality for us to use as a baseline against which to measure our progress in this regard. However, we do note that programs like that of Greater Tucson Leadership (GTL) continue to provide opportunities for young people to develop their skills through internships, training and mentoring support. The fact that has joined forces with the Tucson Metro Chamber this year increases our confidence that the leadership pool in the area of commerce should expand. Unfortunately, none of their programs appear to be specifically directed toward expanding skills in the areas of public service and civic affairs.
