Non-profit organizations play a critical role as supporters of the community in a variety of public arenas. In Pima County, as in the nation as a whole, many of the largest nonprofits provide services in the area of health care.
Local and regional governments are often conflicted in terms of the benefits derived from the social services provided by non-profits in comparison with the loss in tax revenues. This conflict is especially sharp when nonprofits own large amounts of real estate as a percent of their asset base. As this analysis suggests, non-profits in the health care area tend to have higher income to asset ratios. This is less likely to be true for non-profits in the education area.
