Innovation Rankings

The Brookings Institution recently issued a report on the relationship between invention and the economic performance of metropolitan areas in the United States. The report examined a variety of factors that explain the relative performance of metro areas, including the level of educational attainment of the population, the presence of a major research university, and the success of its small businesses in acquiring government support for their research and development efforts. Among the factors that limit the overall performance of the Tucson metro is the large share of economic sectors that are low productivity (health care, leisure and hospitality, and education). An additional factor is the level of educational attainment of the workforce in the scientific and technical areas that support innovation.
