Racial and Ethnic Segregation

The extent to which members of different of racial and ethnic groups are isolated within their own communities and have limited social interactions across these internal borders can be inferred from a segregation or dissimilarity index. These measures range from 0 (in the case of complete integration) to 100 (in the case of complete segregation), where the numbers represent the proportion of the minority group that would have to move for their distribution to equal that of White people. In the analysis below, the index refers to the relationships between Whites and Hispanics in four Western Metro Areas.
