A presentation of his research by former House Energy Doctor and graduate of the Master of Science program Omar Al-Hassawi is now available on YouTube.
Omar presented Designing Thermally Comfortable Outdoor Spaces for Mosques in Hot Arid Regions: A Case Study of the Jawharatul Islam Mosque in Phoenix, Arizona at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver in January 2012. The research identifies the thermal conditions present during summer in an outdoor space of a mosque and attempts to modify those conditions using a design model that incorporates passive strategies. The research was conducted under the direction of SoA professor Nader Chalfoun.
