CAPLA combines research on energy and water to address climate change, urban heat island effect, deforestation, air quality, and thermal comfort in the desert. Architectural solutions include building self-shading and other constructed flexible shade systems, increased ventilation, use of reflective surfaces, passive cooling by vegetation and evaporative processes. CAPLA will expand its scope to the city and regional scale and the role of land use, building massings, street tree plantings, parks, reforestation, and larger open space systems for lowering of meso-climatic temperatures. CAPLA is reinvigorating its participation in the Ph.D. in Arid Land Resource Sciences program.
