On March 23, 2017, CAPLA alum Eric M. Scharf, Principal of Wheat Design Group, made an endowment gift agreement with the University of Arizona Foundation to establish the Elizabeth “Liba” Wheat Memorial Prize Endowment (the “Fund”). The purpose of the Fund is to support the School of Landscape Architecture and Planning in CAPLA. It has been established to support student work that embodies the values inherent in Elizabeth (“Liba”) Wheat’s professional work. These values are: 1) community improvement 2) innovation in design 3) transformation of public spaces. 

The Fund will recognize a student or group of students whose work demonstrates these values in projects during their second or third year in the Master of Landscape Architecture program.

In the fall semester of 2017, the first “Liba” Prize will be bestowed to one of the design teams in LAR 612 Design Studio V. Student teams are preparing green infrastructure design proposals for the University’s main campus with quantified/forecasted performance benefits and climate change resilience in stormwater. Final project submittals will enter the 2017 U.S. EPA Campus RainWorks Challenge Competition

Jury criteria for the first “Liba” Prize is listed below. 

  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of the planning and/or design principles of the subject matter
  • Present innovative and comprehensive planning and/or design solutions
  • Present a superior graphical representation and oral communication of the design proposal
  • Demonstrate excellent collaborative efforts and intellectual growth as a team

The U.S. Department of Energy hosts the Solar Decathlon Design Challenge annually, which gathers students worldwide to present their teams' innovative technologies and designs aimed at fostering the development of the next generation of clean energy buildings. This year, teams from CAPLA will compete alongside students from 37 other universities worldwide, including some from as far as Tehran, Iran.
