Farm to School Month Celebration
October is National Farm to School Month, a celebration of connections between children and locally grown and raised food. In Tucson, one of the celebrations will be held at City High School on Thursday, October 29, 2015, from 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm. The event will take place in the new urban garden on the school’s Pennington Street campus (47 East Pennington Street, Tucson, AZ 85701) an open-air space for play, exploration, learning and growing food that ties with the school’s focus on project-based learning and sustainability.
The urban garden was designed and created by students from the University of Arizona’s College of Architecture, Planning, and Landscape Architecture (CAPLA) in collaboration with students and staff from Tucson’s premier downtown charter schools Paulo Freire Freedom School and City High School. The project, known as the SLUG: Sustainable Laboratory + Urban Garden, received funding from a University of Arizona Green Fund grant and the two schools. Collaboration for the project also included the UA Sustainable City Project, Pima County Public Library Seed Library, and Originate Natural Building Materials.
Co-taught by Chris Trumble, Assistant Professor of Architecture, and Linda Samuels, Sustainable City Project Director, SLUG’s over-arching objective is to transform a currently uninhabitable alleyway into a green public space for teaching and learning. This urban agriculture laboratory will build upon the place-based, hands-on pedagogical strategies of CHS/PFFS and the site-specific, sustainably-focused design capabilities of the students and faculty affiliated with SCP and the University of Arizona.
The garden, which includes an aquaponics system, is an important component of the Farm to School program for the two downtown schools, along with their involvement in Las Milpitas de Cottonwood Community Farm.
Students in the urban gardening class will be giving tours. Students in the culinary class will create and serve beverages and appetizers incorporating plants harvested from the urban garden and Las Milpitas.
