The following messages come from interim Dean Mary Hardin and Provost Andrew Comrie.

Dear Colleagues,

It is my pleasure to share with you the following message from our Provost. I have been honored to serve as your interim dean and will continue through the summer until the arrival of our new permanent dean. I reiterate the Provost's thanks to Dean Goldberg and the search committee for all of their hard work to bring us to this point in our history and evolution as a college. Join me in welcoming Dr. Nancy Pollock-Ellwand!

My best regards,

The following message is sent on behalf of Provost Andrew Comrie

Dear CAPLA colleagues,

I am delighted to announce that Dr. Nancy Pollock-Ellwand will serve as the seventh permanent dean of the College of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture at the University of Arizona.

Dr. Pollock-Ellwand comes to us from the University of Calgary, where she has been Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Design since 2010. Prior to that, she was Head and Chair (dean) of the School of Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Urban Design at the University of Adelaide, and before that she rose up the academic ranks in the School of Landscape Architecture at the University of Guelph. Nancy received her Ph.D. in Planning from the University of Waterloo, her Master of Architecture from the University of Manitoba, and her Bachelor in Landscape Architecture from the University of Guelph.

Nancy brings a breadth of international expertise and insight to the UA, in her scholarly and professional work as well as in her extensive administrative experience. She has worked in several countries including two stints in Japan and she also serves in several capacities on UNESCO's International Council on Monuments and Sites for World Heritage designation. As her background shows, she integrates and values all the CAPLA disciplines and she has a strong interest in interdisciplinary initiatives. Nancy emphasizes the importance of "design" in the most inclusive and creative sense, and she is known as a smart, thoughtful and engaging leader.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to extend my sincere thanks to the search committee and to Engineering Dean Jeff Goldberg for chairing the group. Special thanks to all of them and to the college as a whole for your patience as we interviewed many candidates and then waited while hiring arrangements were made. Even more special thanks are due to our marvelous interim dean, Mary Hardin, who jumped into the role with gusto (and her tool belt when she could!) to keep the college moving this past year.

Dr. Pollock-Ellwand will be making the move from Canada over the summer and begin her duties as dean on July 31st. Please join me in congratulating Nancy on her selection as dean and in welcoming her to CAPLA and the UA!

With best wishes,

Andrew C. Comrie, Ph.D.
