Connect Design, Research and Planning from Site to City
Build expertise across architecture and urban planning with the University of Arizona’s MS.Arch + MSUP dual degree. Designed for students who want to understand the built environment at multiple scales, this program combines the analytical and research strengths of the STEM-designated Master of Science in Architecture with the professional knowledge of policy, governance and planning offered by the Master of Science in Urban Planning.
In just five semesters, students can earn both degrees and develop a broader perspective on how design, development, infrastructure, policy and communities intersect.

Architecture and planning address many of the same challenges, but often approach them from different scales and perspectives. The MS.Arch + MSUP dual degree brings these perspectives together.
Students explore the connections between localized design and regional planning, gaining an understanding of how decisions at the site, neighborhood and city scales influence one another.
The result is a more holistic approach to the built environment, preparing graduates to move between disciplines and contribute to complex projects with greater insight.

The two programs provide distinct but connected educational experiences:
MS.Arch: Research + Data Analytics
The STEM-designated MS.Arch is a research degree focused on investigating social and environmental challenges in the built environment. Students develop advanced analytical and research skills and pursue an individualized thesis that can generate new knowledge and approaches to real-world challenges.
MSUP: Planning + Policy + Practice
The professional MSUP develops expertise in planning processes, policy, governance and urban design. Students engage with issues including transportation, housing, environmental stewardship and heritage conservation while developing the skills to address challenges facing cities and communities.
