Jie Hu has a bachelor degree of architecture from Chongqing University, and two master degrees of landscape architecture, one from Beijing Forestry University, and one from University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign). He worked for eight years with Sasaki Associates, Inc. beginning in 1995 and returned to China in 2003 to join Tsinghua University as a professor in Department of Landscape Architecture at School of Architecture. At the same time, he joined in Beijing Tsinghua Tongheng Urban Planning & Design Institute as the director of Department of Landscape Architecture, which is now a Center with over 150 staff.
His major research is “Shanshui-city -- exploring sustainable urban development in China” and he wishes that the joy of Shanshui may fill all cities.
His projects have won 49 international awards and 47 national awards, including 6 ASLA awards and its different chapters’ awards, 21 IFLA APR or IFLA AAPME awards, 11 BALI international awards, 8 Green Good Design awards, 3 Torsanlorenzo international awards.
He was awarded Lifetime Achievement Award of The Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture (CELA) in 2018, and was awarded 2011 Chinese Innovational Honorary, 2008 & 2010 Chinese Scientist Honorary, Beijing Olympic Advanced Individual, Beijing Hi-tech Olympics Sophisticated Individual, Beijing 2007 Foreign experts "Great Wall Friendship Award" and Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Torchbearer.
