Material Labs Policies and Procedures

The labs are governed by the policies below in order to ensure your safety through appropriate use of the facility. Users of the labs are responsible for understanding and complying with these policies. Access will be provided only upon successful completion of the following:  

  1. A one-time in-person training in the labs
  2. An annual proctored Safety Procedure online test accessed through your studio class 
  3. A signed formal contract asserting your agreement to abide by lab rules and regulations.

  • Lab users MUST be registered students in CAPLA, faculty or staff and have legitimate CAPLA course related work.
  • Student access to the labs will be provided only upon successful completion of the following:  
    • an annual proctored online test about safety procedures,
    • a one-time in-person training in the labs, and
    • a formally approved contract asserting understanding of and agreement to abide by lab rules and regulations.
  • Lab access privileges can be revoked at any time at the discretion of the lab manager.
  • Termination of lab access privileges must be resolved with the lab manager.
  • Outside work is possible with school director and lab manager approval.
  • The lab is closed during winter and summer breaks.
  • Material lab staff and student monitors are available to ensure the facilities are used in a safe manner, to assist with projects and tool usage, and to coordinate the labs usage. Should you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.

 

  • Lab hours are established each semester. Hours are posted on the lab doors, and on the webpage.
  • Any extension of scheduled operating hours MUST be approved by shop management.
  • Extension of lab hours must be requested by instructors at least 48 hours prior to the hours in question.

 

  • Safety glasses or goggles MUST be worn while in the labs, no exception. This includes the outside "deck" fabrication area. Prescription glasses alone are not acceptable. Sunglasses, whether safety or not, are not acceptable in the labs. Safety glasses can now be purchased through the front office.
  • Ear muffs and ear plugs are available and should be worn during sustained use of noise generating equipment.
  • Dust masks are available and should be worn when generating significant dust.
  • The labs do not supply safety glasses; please purchase your own.
  • Steel toed shoes are required in designated metal fabrication areas.

  • A clean lab is an effective lab. Be considerate of other lab users by keeping your work area neat. Always clean up after using any tools right after use.
  • ANY materials sitting on the floor at ANY time will be considered dangerous to other students and/or trash and treated accordingly.
  • Sweep up any significant dust or refuse as you make it. Throw away scraps as you make them.
  • Daily clean-up starts ten minutes before closing. Please help us clean up by stopping work, returning tools and removing/storing your materials at least ten minutes before closing time.
  • The lab is closed during winter break and summer.

  • Materials are stored on the movable blue carts or in the appropriate wood and metal racks. Your name and date should be clearly placed on the materials or they will be considered general use. At the end of each academic year, all projects and materials have to be removed from the labs or they will be thrown away or recycled.
  • All projects need to be removed from the work surfaces they were made on, daily, and stored before you leave the labs or they will be thrown away. Obtain permission from a lab monitor before leaving any projects unattended in the lab.
  • Unidentified materials may be disposed of at the lab monitor's discretion.
  • Identified materials may be disposed of if left in the lab for over one week.

  • A CNC router form must be filled out for every file in order to access the CNC router or CNC mill. Form can be accessed here.
  • File preparation: submit separate forms for each geometry you want to CNC.
  • Put the bottom left corner of each part at the Rhino origin world 0,0,0.
  • Use the Rhino_Cam plug-in in Rhino 5 to set up your file. Tutorials on RhinoCam page under Learn More tab, select Mill Start Guide, PDF or videos. This can be found at: RhinoCam Tutorials.
  • After file is prepared contact a CNC monitor from the list by email or phone. The list is posted at lab entrance.
  • It may take several revisions before your file is ready so please allow for this time especially at the end of the semester.

  • Students are responsible for checking their models prior to submitting them to 3D printing staff.
  • Submit .stl file to 3D printer monitor for access to print.
  • The cost of the printers is: $.10/gram for all printers except the "Lexus," which is $.25/gram. 
  • We can print ABS and PLA.  PLA plastic support must be part of your file.
  • Allow time to access the printers especially at peak end of semester times. 

  • Students must first complete online test, links found on the laser page
  • Participate in a hands on tutorial.
  • Read and understand the policies and procedures found on the laser page.
  • Laser access is 24/7, the policies and procedures are found on the laser page.
  • Charges are with CatCard only. 
  • Students who fail to follow procedures will have their access revoked.

  •  Lab users MUST be registered students in CAPLA, faculty or staff and have legitimate CAPLA course related work.
  •  Stationary Power tools will be off from 12 AM to 8 AM
  •  All laser waste needs to be discarded into gondola outside.
  •  All power tools in this room are designed to work only in the Model Lab and will not work anywhere else.
    • The power tools from the rest of the Material Labs will not work in the model lab.
  •  Similar to other Material Labs, everyone who enters must wear safety glasses while in the room.
  •  Before entering Model Lab, all students must have had all required tests and follow Safety Guidelines and Procedures. 
  • You may not open the door for other people for their own safety. If you do and are caught allowing someone else into the lab both you and the student will be penalized:
  1.  1st offense- Model Lab privledges suspended for one week; $50 fine.
  2. 2nd offense- Model Lab privledges suspended for one month; $100 fine.
  3. 3rd offense- Model Lab privledges suspended for remainder of the semester; $200 fine.

  • Everyone using the wood lab must go through an orientation and have a passed test on file with the lab manager.
  • Orientations are given at the start of every academic year. For orientations during the year, special arrangements have to be made with the lab manager.
  •  Lab users MUST be registered students in CAPLA, faculty or staff and have legitimate CAPLA course related work.
  • You can only work in the labs with a monitor present.
  • Everyone who enters must wear safety glasses while in the room, whether they are using the tools or not.
  • All students must have had all required tests and follow Safety Guidelines and Procedures. 
  • If the above procedures are not folowed then you will be penalized:
  1.  1st offense- Material lab privledges suspended for one week; $50 fine.
  2. 2nd offense- Material lab privledges suspended for one month; $100 fine.
  3. 3rd offense- Material lab privledges suspended for the remainder of the semester; $200 fine.

 

  • Everyone using the Metal Lab must go through an orientation and have a passed test on file with the Lab Manager. Orientations are given at the start of every academic year. For orientations during the year, special arrangements have to be made with the lab manager.
  •  Lab users MUST be registered students in CAPLA, faculty or staff and have legitimate CAPLA course related work.
  • You can only work in the labs with a monitor present.
  • Everyone who enters must wear safety glasses while in the room, whether they are using the tools or not.
  • All students must have had all required tests and follow Safety Guidelines and Procedures. 
  • If the above procedures are not followed then you will be penalized:
  1.  1st offense- Material lab privileges suspended for one week; $50 fine.
  2. 2nd offense- Material lab privileges suspended for one month; $100 fine.
  3. 3rd offense- Material lab privileges suspended for the remainder of the semester; $200 fine.

Everyone using the Machining Lab needs to have completed the AME machining intro course or some equivalent before gaining access.
