The University of Arizona’s online bachelor’s program ranks No. 7 out of 337 total programs by U.S. News & World Report, an impressive climb into the top 10 only five years after Arizona Online became eligible for the esteemed rankings.

“The University of Arizona has worked tirelessly to develop exceptional educational opportunities for students throughout the world, both in our traditional classrooms and in online settings,” says University of Arizona President Robert C. Robbins. “This ranking places us among the nation’s most prestigious online education programs and shows our commitment to flexibility and accessibility.”

The College of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture (CAPLA) offers two fully online programs in partnership with Arizona Online: the Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Built Environments (SBE) and the Master of Real Estate Development (MRED), both programs that respond to a growing need for skilled professionals ready to tackle the grand challenges of a rapidly changing world.

“Students looking to enter the new green economy have an extraordinary opportunity with the SBE program,” says Ladd Keith, program chair and assistant professor of planning and sustainable built environments. “SBE students gain a comprehensive understanding of sustainability principles that prepare them with the skills to make our buildings, landscapes and communities more resilient. In the SBE, they’ll discover the ecological, social and economic forces that affect the built environment and how to creative innovative and realistic solutions.”

Students in the online undergraduate program choose an emphasis in either Sustainable Buildings or Sustainable Real Estate Development. Graduates are currently working across the country as architectural designers, renewal energy systems designers, environmental researchers and leaders of sustainability-focused nonprofits, government agencies and corporations.

“The online MRED focuses on responsible development with an emphasis on public/private partnerships, transit-oriented development, sustainable cities and green buildings,” says Lauri Macmillan Johnson, director of the School of Landscape Architecture and Planning. “Our expert faculty prepare students for a rewarding career in the real estate investment and development market.”

The online graduate degree follows a three-stage approach: Students first acquire the fundamentals of real estate development, learn critical vocabulary and understand the procedural and legal requirements in the field. Next, they examine the key financial concepts of real estate, including cash-flow models, market analysis and pro forma development. Finally, students examine the development process as a whole, applying the analysis tools obtained in previous courses to actual development projects.

Because the programs are online, students may complete the overall degree at their own pace. And like CAPLA’s on-campus programs, students are supported by attentive advisors and outstanding faculty and have access to a robust community of alumni mentors for networking and career opportunities.
