Biography
To me, the CAPLA experience is about growth, exploration, and striving to become the best designer possible, both through overcoming challenges individually and collaborating with others.
Hello, my name is Josh Istrate, and I’m from Phoenix, Arizona. I am currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in architecture at CAPLA, with an expected graduation in 2028.
To me, the CAPLA experience is about growth, exploration, and striving to become the best designer possible—both through overcoming challenges individually and collaborating with others. It’s also about building meaningful, lasting relationships with fellow students and faculty who share the same passion for design.
Outside of architecture, I enjoy traveling, spending time with family and friends, staying active at the gym, and playing sports. What I value most about CAPLA is the supportive community, everyone is always willing to help, whether it’s with design projects or personal challenges.
One of my biggest challenges has been finding the right balance between my academic and social life. I’ve learned the importance of making time for myself and the activities I enjoy to stay grounded and inspired.
Professionally, I’ve gained experience through an architectural internship, where I worked on small-scale renovations and additions using Revit, assisted with as-builts, and visited project sites. Additionally, my hands-on construction experience has given me a deeper understanding of structural details and the building process.
My advice for prospective CAPLA students is to approach every project with dedication and curiosity, and to never hesitate to ask for help or feedback.
