Eight Questions with Bachelor of Architecture Student Jack Schulman
“I enrolled into this school not knowing that I would be leaving with a second family.”
Jack Schulman came to Tucson from Los Angeles for a break from the fast-paced lifestyle. Since joining CAPLA in 2018, he has been blown away by the strong sense of forming lifelong friendships while diligently pursuing his dream career. Recently Jack was a member on the 2023 UArizona Homecoming Court, representing the CAPLA community during the homecoming festivities.
What brought you to the University of Arizona to study architecture?
Architecture has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember, and that feeling became solidified when I toured CAPLA as a freshman. It just felt like the perfect place for me to explore my potential as an aspiring architect. Coming from the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles, I was seeking a change from the congestion and constraints of city life. Opting for the University of Arizona provided the space I so desired. In the process, I've fallen in love with Tucson's unique culture and identity, finding it to be a refreshing contrast to what I was accustomed to.
What excites you most about studying architecture?
I'm currently enrolled in the Urban Agency cluster, and my area of interest focuses on fostering a cleaner and more livable urban environment. What excites me most about what I study is the opportunity to pioneer innovative new perspectives on city living. I'm eager to go out and explore how the urban fabric can be reimagined and rewoven to adapt to pressing challenges such as global warming and overpopulation. I like to believe that it's not just about envisioning change; it's about actively contributing to the evolution of our cities into resilient, sustainable spaces that can thrive amidst the complexities of the future.
What do you do in your free time outside of school?
When I came to Tucson, I was eager to start exploring and connecting with nature. One of my favorite ways of doing this is through camping. Being able to drive up to Mount Lemmon and spend a day by Rose Canyon Lake is a magical and rejuvenating experience. I also spend time in the materials lab tinkering with different fabrication methods, which has resulted in some exciting work!
What do you like most about CAPLA?
What I love most about CAPLA is the community. You can't help but feel a sense of place when inside this space. I knew since foundation studio that the faculty and staff genuinely care about your personal success, not just as a future architect but as a person as well. Being in such a small school allows you to have that sense of community that you cannot get anywhere else.
What has been your biggest challenge at CAPLA and how have you overcome that challenge?
My biggest challenge at CAPLA was finding a balance between academic and social life. I addressed this challenge by exploring both aspects, experiencing life on both ends of the spectrum. It's essential to push oneself, but equally important not to deny oneself the necessary amenities to be the best version of oneself. In essence, it's about finding a harmonious blend that allows personal growth and academic success without compromising well-being.
What are your career aspirations?
My career aspirations involve networking with firms that are working on synchronizing architecture and technology to create a more sustainable future. I strive to make the living environment a healthier place for future generations, and I'm happy to work in any architectural field to achieve that goal.
What advice do you have for incoming CAPLA students?
Don't be afraid to give yourself the space needed to be your best self. Use the time you have here at CAPLA to find that academic and social balance that works for you. Also, take risks and put yourself out there! You only have one life to live, and the more you expose yourself to opportunities, the more chances you'll have.
What does the CAPLA experience mean to you?
I enrolled into this school not knowing that I would be leaving with a second family. I am certain that this community of talented friends, professors and staff will continue long after my time as a student and I believe that is a powerful thing.
