Robin Shambach, B.Arch '85, named CAPLA's Alumna of the Year

The College of Architecture, Planning, and Landscape Architecture is proud to recognize Robin Shambach, B.Arch '85, as its 2024 Alumna of the Year.

Shambach is one of 17 distinguished alumni honored during the University of Arizona’s Alumni of the Year Awards Ceremony on February 27. This award recognizes individuals for their professional achievements, public service, advocacy for education, volunteerism, and contributions to students, their college, and the university.

A dedicated architect, mentor, and advocate for diversity in the profession, Shambach has made a lasting impact on both the built environment and the CAPLA community.

With more than 38 years of experience in architecture, she has demonstrated exceptional leadership and a deep commitment to public and educational design. As a founding member of BWS Architects, she has played a key role in shaping the firm’s success, contributing to projects that enhance learning environments and public spaces across Arizona.

In an industry still grappling with issues of sexism, racism, and classism, Shambach has navigated these challenges while empowering those around her.

Her contributions were also recognized during CAPLA's Homecoming Celebration in October, where Bill Mackey, a lecturer in the School of Architecture, described her as someone who has "navigated the complicated world of architecture and construction as a successful architect."

Ryan Smith, director of the School of Architecture, emphasized that the award not only acknowledges professional achievements but also celebrates the lasting impact alumni have on the college, school, and university.

"I can't tell you how many countless reviews I've stepped into, and Robin is right there," he said. "In particular, she has been impactful in the local community by advocating for women who are underrepresented in leadership positions in the profession—and our own students recognize her efforts and feel empowered."

Shambach is an active supporter of the Women in Architecture Society, and her leadership in advancing inclusivity has had a profound impact on students and colleagues alike.

Her passion for mentoring the next generation of architects is evident in her ongoing support for CAPLA students. She leads the BWS Architects Scholarship Program at the University of Arizona, providing students with invaluable hands-on internship experiences. Additionally, she is a generous donor to CAPLA’s crowdfunding campaigns, helping students achieve their academic and professional goals.

Reflecting on her time at CAPLA, Shambach expressed gratitude for the mentorship she received as a student.

"When I arrived here as a student, I was embraced by a community of faculty who really cared about me," she said. "They helped me find my skills. They helped me find my voice so that when I left CAPLA, I had more confidence and an ability to navigate and really build a practice that I've enjoyed for nearly 40 years."

Beyond financial contributions, Shambach dedicates her time and expertise to mentoring students and young professionals. Each semester, she returns to CAPLA as an expert consultant, offering critical insights on student projects and guiding aspiring architects toward success. Her deep sense of responsibility to the profession is evident in her commitment to fostering emerging talent.

"It has been a joy to stay connected to the CAPLA community and wonderful to see how this network extends into the world," she said. "As a practice, we have the opportunity to collaborate with national firms that, coincidentally, employ CAPLA graduates. Time and again, I hear how much they appreciate the skills and perspectives these graduates bring to their work."
