Architecture and Sustainable Built Environments Assistant Professor Jonathan Bean has been named one of four 2021 CUES Distinguished Fellows by UArizona’s Center for University Education Scholarship. His project, Climate Heroes: Transforming the Built Environment, addresses the fundamental challenge of our time: climate change.

For the fourth consecutive year, CAPLA undergraduate architecture student teams were finalists in the international Solar Decathlon Design Challenge. This year the teams placed second in the Urban Single-Family Housing and Mixed-Use Multifamily Building divisions.

Teresa Rosano has been named the inaugural Anne Graham Rockfellow Memorial Award winner by the University of Arizona chapter of WIAS. Rockfellow, who taught at UArizona from 1897 to 1900, paved the way for other women pursuing architecture as an academic degree and profession.

Fourth-year B.Arch student Ana Astiazaran has been awarded the top student sustainable design excellence award from the American Institute of Architects and Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture.

Oscar Lopez, CAPLA senior lecturer in architecture and founder of Tucson architecture firm s p a c e BUREAU, was one of only three architects nationwide to receive the 2021 Associates Award from the American Institute of Architects.

CAPLA’s AIAS student chapter, cited for its “incredible level of effort and coordination of leadership,” has won the highest honor the national AIAS organization can bestow upon a chapter.

Sara Ghaemi’s Algae Heat-Sink and Air Purifier is an algae-based biosystem integrated into furniture that is capable of heating, cooling and purifying indoor air.

The U.S. Green Building Council recognizes “Women in Green Sheroes”—women who “demonstrate how the power of purpose can shape our lives, our careers and our changing world.” This month, the honor was bestowed upon CAPLA Lecturer in Architecture Sandra Bernal-Cordova.
